Postal Strikes

Recommended Posts

My point is that snail mail is dying, business snail mail has competition so businesses have an alternative albeit a more expensive one. I think the current situation has similarities to the miners in the early 80's.

Gringo you didn't have anywhere near the wage you're on now when you started. If the circumstances were reversed I'm sure you'd be striking. When was the last strike in your industry? Did you slate the drivers on here? No, thought not.

To say they should retrain for a different job is inflammatory, some of them have been posties for 25 years plus, it's part of their identity.

I don't think this is an appropriate forum to discuss politics, especially with all the closet tories.  :023:

You're right, I didn't. That was because it wasn't discussed on here - or at least I never saw it. I had my rant about them (and the signallers in the more recent events) and a rail forum and not a football forum.  :004:

I'm a Nationalist actually :004:

I cant see whats unreasonable about my posts on this topic or why being called a 'Tory' is considered an insult, if the Tories believe that people shouldnt have the right to endanger others jobs through their selfish actions then sign me up.

If a postman doesnt want to get paid x amount per hour, get up for work at 3am or do 60 hour weeks, then every opportunity exists for them to work their way out of the situation into a better job and in the rare occurrence that there isnt a chance for them to do so then tough luck, be thankful for the money you are paid.  Tescos staff dont work 60 hour weeks but then they get paid less, the choice is always there.  Working for the RM isnt national service, these people applied for their positions, if they werent aware at the time of doing so that the company was p1ssing away money or they joined at a time when they could get away with whatever they wanted, then again tough, every company changes and no amount of strike action is going to make a cheque from the government get any larger.  I'll repeat myself here, if their employer is losing hundreds of millions a year (possibly over a billion) then they need to realise that things cant continue as they are forever.

A girl that works for me sometimes used to be an employee with the RM in a Scottish sorting office, when I asked her what her take on the current situation was she basically said she wasnt surprised.  She said the night staff were told to work slower or theyd have to cut the shifts of everybody by 4 hours, which would lead to a % of the workforce having to leave, despite the fact that shifts lasting 4 hours longer than they had to was costing them thousands a day!  People who worked too fast were made to feel guilty/threatened, the floor supervisor would walk them around to let them meet face to face with the people THE EMPLOYEE was sacking, due to the increased workrate.

Apparently 3 years ago somebody changed the time of the first nightshift break by 5 minutes, the union reps were up in arms and ordered members to leave the floor, the girl was caught up in it all.  She said she was p1ssing herself laughing at some 70's throwback on a megaphone, standing on some pallets, shouting about the lack of respect the managers had for the working staff!

I am a socialist and I do believe workers rights should be protected, in terms of being given fair chances and offered flexibility especially, the more money a profitable company gives back to the staff responsible the better.  But the accounts have to at least come close to adding up or else its all for nothing.

Firstly, apologies to Clacher for the insult, and yes that is what it was. However, reading subsequent posts reveals a deeper comprehension of the difficulties faced not only by the Royal Mail employees, but by our rural and urban communities as a whole. The decimation of our postal services, especially the closure of lifeline post offices, will sound the death knell for many a community, and on an even more serious note, will destroy the lifes of many of our elderly and infirmed residents, who depend on these services as more than just somewhere they pick up their pensions. When the mail goes wholly commercial the companies involved will cherry pick the lucrative routes and dump the rest, destroying vast swathes of our culture and our community. The b*stards are still giving us a kicking and we could be too late in recognising it. Fight for your post office, if for no other reason than that you will be old some day too.

The CWU had to fight for their rights about twenty years ago, all at BT went on strike, (apart from a few scabs), not for money but for exactly what action man stated above.  BT is now overrun by contractors and thousands have been offered redundancy over the years since.

Much as it irks people, you have to stand up and be counted, the repercussions are deeper than what meets the eye....................now wheres the mail I am waiting for :029:
